Grih Kalyan Kendra was set up in the year 1957 under the then Ministry of Home Affair as a Staff Welfare Scheme with a view to promote the socio-economic and educational status of needy Central Government employees and their family dependents through various welfare activities like Nursery Schools, Creche centre and Craft Centre etc. in their residential colonies in Delhi. The activities of the Kendra subsequently widened to other cities, viz Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Nagpur, Dehradun, Jaipur, Faridabad and Ghaziabad. In order to instill further confidence in the central government employees and their family dependants and signal the government’s commitment to provide stable policy framework for their welfare, the Kendra was registered as a Society named Grih Kalyan Kendra Board (GKK Board) under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, in the year 1965. It was working under the aegis of Ministry of Home Affairs till year 1986. Since 26th February, 1987, GKK has been working under the aegis of DoPT.
The Objectives and activities of GKK have since evolved and are more in sync with the changes in socio economic environment and the status of govt. employees.
The aims and objectives of the GKK Board are as under
The Kendra has the basic objective to provide facilities for the Welfare of Central Government Employees and their families by way of;
To provide technical & vocational training.
Fitness Centres
Creches & Pre-primary schooling.
Samaj Sadans for holding social & cultural functions.
Provide space for organizing cultural activities/health camps etc.
Enter into agreements with private parties to provide space for conducting classes in creative activities.
